AB - The figure of a old man in a hero novel in the late Joseon Dynasty is immortal wizard and has an unusual atmosphere. His space is of transcendent utopia. This is a place where the hero learns the ability and destiny to save the world. And in terms of changing the flow of works, it is a space of growth and transformation. The old man in the hero novel appears as the protagonist's “mentor(teacher)”. His most important role is to make the vulnerable protagonist an extraordinary hero.
However, the old woman who appears in the classical novel has many different roles and personalities, but the old man appear only as positive and ideal characters. I think this is due to the different notions of men and women based on the Confucian value order emphasized in the classical novels of the late Joseon Dynasty. In Joseonera social status, it appeared to respect all elderly people on the surface, but in fact, discrimination existed. The most discriminated against was the difference between men and women. I think the reason why the old woman's appearance and role in the classic novel were varied is that there was a perception of discrimination against women in the category of the elderly. I think the Confucian value order and the perception of discrimination between men and women, which were emphasized in the classic novels of the late Joseon Dynasty, are one of the reasons that stereotyped the image of the elderly male and separated from the reality.
