AB - ‘Story’ is not a lower genre of ‘novel’, but a fundamental element of the fiction. A major concern in the relationship between story and novel is related to the intention to explore the nature of story(or novel) from an evolutionary point of view. Benjamin's identification of “farmer/sailor” types of the storyteller does not offer detailed criteria for a classification or specific illustrations. The Bokdujang(crown maker) of ‘the story of King Kyeungmun’ in Samgukyusa(『三國遺事』) and Scheherazade in Arabian Nights(『千一夜話』)can be seen as extended examples that are related to ‘fact’ and ‘fiction’, and offer a better understanding of the two different types of the storyteller. Bokdujang(as a documentary storyteller) and Scheherazade (as a fictional storyteller) are considered as storytellers that illustrate the qualities of two different types of the storyteller. Lee Chung󰠏joon's nevel The Life Story of the Humanist Mr. Mujojak(『인문주의자 무소작 씨의 종생기』) is a work that examines the relationship between ‘story’ and ‘novel’ through a biography of an outsider who has been a storyteller for his lifetime. Mr. Musojak became a storyteller because of the advice(wisdom) from the listener that true life(story) has no boundary between life and story. The story presupposes the speaker and the listener. While the story is a genre that allows unrestricted communication between the speaker and the listener, modern fiction is almost impossible to communicate directly. Mr. Musojak listened to the honest advice from the listener and understood the problems of his story. Through the self󰠏reflection and criticism, he could improve his story and became a true storyteller.
