AB - Hwang Sun-Won’s novel ‘Seller of pen and ink’ was dramatized as a TV literature ‘Seller of pen and ink’. Based on this fact, I will argue about different and same factors between two versions of ‘Seller of pen and ink’ to investigate a common feature of two works. Old man Seo walks with a limp because of polio, and sells pen and ink to keep his life on the road. The novel ‘Seller of pen and ink’ tells about the joys and sorrows of old man Seo’s life. Novel ‘Seller of pen and ink’ is a good source which connotes writer’s consciousness after Korean War. because the author Hwang Sun-Won reflects his writer’s suffering from accommodation to South Korea society and his weary life as a stranger to character’s life in his novel.
A lot of Hwang Sun-Won’s novels were turned into movies from 1960s to 1970s, but the novel ‘Seller of pen and ink’ had not been filmed. In 1983, it adopted to TV drama. It shows several facts that new military regime found their characteristics as a literature drama in this novel and they could put their political idea into this novel.
This study will investigate the aspect of transition through comparison between opposed characters and descriptive conversion of novel ‘Seller of pen and ink’ and TV drama ‘Seller of pen and ink’. Also, it discusses a meaning of TV drama ‘Seller of pen and ink’ by analyzing symbolic image of colors.
