ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine the expression of transitivity, and analyzes the recognition system of Korean speakers and foreign Korean learners. This study is a follow-up to Lee(2016), that analyzed how foreign Korean learners perceive transitivity, and expanded the scope of the research to Korean speakers. This survey tried to identify the concept of transitivity through the use of ‘-eul/leul’. A picture showing the relationship between the agent and the object and verbs that could use both ‘-eul’ and ‘-leul’ were presented so that the survey participants could accurately grasp the situation of the discourse. Through this study, the following points were able to be inferred regarding transitivity. First of all, the presence of agents was affecting the expression of transitivity. The choice of ‘-eul/leul’ varies depending on the presence of the agent. It also showed that the transitivity was affected by the meaning of [status] when delivering information about the object. Finally, through the expression of transitivity, we found the possibility of predicting the ability of Korean language learners. Although the predictive value was not high, it could be a good evaluation tool if big data is built well in the future and machine learning is applied.
