AB - This research examines the pattern of how Korean language learners use the meaning of Korean vocabulary. For the research, we collected and refined the usage of the locomotive verb ‘ota’ and secured a total of 3,263 usages. We also investigated the meanings of ‘ota’ defined in the Korean dictionary as well as the usage by learners to establish 37 types of meanings and attached meaning annotations to each usage. The result of analysis revealed that 17 meanings of ‘ota’ out of total 37 were adopted in the beginner’s level with the basic meaning weighting the highest with 64.74%. The meanings used with high frequency were mainly related to the learning topic, function, and grammar of the beginner’s level. In the intermediate level, total 23 types of meanings appeared. The weight of the basic meaning was still the highest, but compared to the basic level, sentence structures or preceding words that were affected by ‘ota’ diversified. In the advanced level, total 26 meaning variations appeared, expanding the scope of its use. Moreover, in this stage, abstract meaning expansions such as ‘change of time’ and ‘change of status’ were observed. In this stage, highly abstract meaning expansions that were in the context of ‘health, feeling, and opportunity’ were used frequently.
To summarize the above, it is as the following. First, as learner’s proficiency gets higher, the range of ‘ota’'s usage expands. This is in contrast to the former research where it was said that proficiency does not affect the range of usage. Second, the meaning expansion of ‘ota’ expands in the direction of concrete to abstract. However as the learner gets proficient, a large portion of expanded meaning seems to be acquired unintentionally. This indicates that expanded meanings of vocabulary which are frequently used. This indicates that in Korean learning, there is a need to establish a curriculum that takes into account both explicit and implicit learning for learner to familiarize with the expanded meanings of vocabulary which are frequently used.
