ABSTRACT

The University of Seoul (UOS) operates a writing course, including the study of Sino-Korean words. In other universities, the portion of the study of Sino-Korean words in writing courses is being reduced or completely eliminated. However, In UOS, the study of Sino-Korean words was newly included into the writing course in the process of revamping various liberal arts subjects together. As a result, writing textbooks also added contents for the study of Sino-Korean words. The contents for the study of Sino-Korean words in the 2016-2017 writing textbook remained similar to that of any other classical Chinese language subject. From 2018, the contents for the study of Sino-Korean words have changed significantly with the intention of aligning it more closely with the nature of the writing course. The textbook focused on using Sino-Korean words correctly in sentences rather than on the composition of Chinese characters, and is filled with the errors shown in the writings of students. Details included simple spelling errors of Sino-Korean words, pleonasm between Sino-Korean and native Korean, refining target words of Sino-Korean words, current terms and jargon. In fact, the deeper question is whether there is a need to teach Sino-Korean words in a writing course. The background of this question is a long-standing argument between the Hangeul only usage and the Chinese character mixed usage. The new textbook was created as a result of compromise in accordance with the given reality, rather than answering the argument head on.
