ABSTRACT

Transmedia means the flow of content across multiple media platforms. The content of any medium is always another medium. From the pioneer McLuhan to current media scholars such as Manovich and Lessig, this interplay among media has been the most critical issue in media studies. Media has become inevitable environment from which we cannot escape. The aim of this paper is to disclose the technological condition of transmedia. Three processes of transmedia are described, along with the cultural results of such trends. The transmedia process has three stages: rip, mix, and burn. Rip means the detachment of the contents from a material medium. Mix is a stage in which the users remix the contents with their own creative ideas. Intentional selecting and creative composing of the ripped contents construct the ceaseless process of transmedia. Finally, a new content is made by burning them together. The cultural results of transmedia can be found in the connection between production and consumption processes. The users were easily able to make connections among dispersed media contents. Transmedia also increases the inter-connectivity among users. They share contents through peer to peer digital archives. We are living in the new media environment made by such media interactions. The distinct boundaries between different media are disappearing in this new digital environment.
