ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to critically examine Patrick Stokes' claim that a digitally resurrected avatar created with digital remains such as text, audio, and images cannot sustain the deceased’s personhood. Stokes argues that relatively static digital remains such as texts and images on my social network profiles are not simply possessions like material remains such as wristwatches, but play a role in constituting my identity and maintaining my presence and personhood. Interestingly, however, he refuses to admit such a status to the case of digital avatars. This article examines the grounds provided by Stokes for this claim and seeks to show that these grounds are insufficient to justify his argument.
