ABSTRACT

This study focuses on the development of a chatbot based on the Japanese folktale The Jellyfish Has No Bones, created using Google's chatbot builder, Dialogflow, with a group of Korean middle school students. The process is analyzed through the lens of intercultural education, a crucial approach in multicultural societies. Specifically, this study applies Michael Byram's intercultural theory, with an emphasis on the skills of ‘interpreting and relating’ and ‘discovering and interacting.’ The participating students analyzed and interpreted various elements of the story, generating questions and responses while continuously refining and testing the chatbot from the user’s perspective. Through this process, the students engaged deeply with another culture and enhanced their intercultural competence.
