ABSTRACT

This study explores how documentary narrative structures and modes of perception are transforming with the rise of OTT platforms. Using the TVING original documentary Shaman: The Ghost Legend as a case study, it examines presenter-centered narration, the juxtaposition of experience–interpretation–documentation, and serialized storytelling strategies. The analysis highlights how the documentary departs from traditional explanatory modes by foregrounding the audience’s interpretive role through a “suspended state of perception.” It also shows how drone cinematography and the exposure of filming devices create a “double gaze,” reshaping the concept of documentary reality. Ultimately, OTT documentaries are understood as multi-layered structures where affect, experience, and interpretation intersect, transforming audiences into active participants in meaning-making.
