ABSTRACT

This article examines how plogging, an environmental practice, circulates through digital spaces and comes to be signified as a media performance. Drawing on Jane Bennett’s account of materiality and Jussi Parikka’s discussions of media, it focuses on how trash-material is repositioned as a material constituent of the media environment. By moving beyond the passivity attributed to trash or waste as material remains of processes of production and consumption, this article identifies the agency of remains and conceptualizes plogging as a media performance that emerges from the entanglement of media, matter, and performance, extending beyond human ethical practice. It further explores the meanings that emanate across the human and nonhuman. Through the (re)translation of the materiality of trash, which has traditionally existed as a passive object, this article seeks to rethink the significance of performance enacted through the capacities of nonhuman entities.
