This study is to examine whether the core values and virtues of character education, as defined by the Personality Education Promotion Act, are valid from the main approach of character education, and to suggest the direction of character education to cultivate character virtues in that approach. To this end, we understood the seven approaches of the main approach to character education, looked at the relevance of character virtues in accordance with what was central to each approach, and looked at how character education should be done on the basis of each approach. The results are as follows: First, by grasping the meaning of where each major approach to character education should focus and provide character education, the eight core values a nd virtues of character education: etiquette, filial piety, honesty, responsibility, respect, consideration, and communication. In addition, it was possible to determine whether cooperation is an important virtue of character education. Second, the direction of character education was presented in the plan and major approaches for cultivating the core values and virtues of character education. This study is meaningful in that it provided knowledge and access to the attributes of character education virtues in the absence of clear understanding and consensus on character education at school sites, and that it identified the emphasis within the main approach of character education and suggested the criteria for character education where the focus of character education should be placed.

This study set out to analyze research trends in 19 papers on the perceptions of filial piety among 250 papers published in Journal of Korean Hyo Studies from its first issue in 2014 to the issue in 2019 and propose future research directions for the perceptions of filial piety. For these purposes, the investigator analyzed these papers and their trends according to the year of publication, methodology, samples, measuring instruments, related variables, subjects, and topics. The findings were as follows: first, there was a paper on the perceptions of filial piety in the journal in 2010, and a couple of papers were published on the subject in the journal every year since then; second, quantitative researches accounted for the biggest part at 13(68.4%), being followed by qualitative researches at five(26.3%) and literature study at one(5.3%). The most popular methodology in qualitative researches was case study, which was followed by phenomenological study; third, the biggest number of researches targeted grown-up. Various groups of people participated in researches including marriage migrant women, soldiers, and foreign students studying in the nation; fourth, the most popular research topic was self at eight(40%), which was followed by family at three(15%), adjustment at three(15%), and interpersonal relationship at two(10%) in the order; and finally, the study discussed researches on the perceptions of filial piety and made proposals based on these findings.

Along with entering Korea, foreigners encounter conflicts between their mother culture and Korean culture in their daily lives. Korea is a country with a strong collectivism called 'us', and we can feel that unfamiliar collectivism culture affects not only individual self-existence but also survival. Korea has a strong sense of empathy with the interest of other people through the consciousness of 'we', a community consciousness, and its representative collective emotion is 'Jeong(情)'. Jeong is not simply an emotion of personal qualities. It is a symbol representing the ideal humanity pursued by the members of our society as mutual exchange emotions formed by time and behavior style accordingly, and a symbol of trust and coexistence that supports our society. While Korean language-culture education emphasizes ‘Jeong(情)’ as positive role that our society should pursue in Korean language-culture education, it shows dualism in Korean culture as negative culture because of the lack of objectivity and rationality. Since the modern era, politics, economics, and society have changed rapidly, the two norms that have different characteristics have coexisted in the same situation. This 'dual value system' can be seen to be formed in the confusion of polarized values. This paper may divide justice dual value system into 'collectivism and individualism', 'humanism and materialism', 'authoritarianism and egalitarianism', 'particularism and universalism', which ‘Jeong(情)’ may seem irrational in terms of justice and fairness in modern society, but can contribute to try to overcome the inhumanity and individualism of contemporary society and contribute to the interests of the whole community. In addition, we reviewed the necessity of recognizing the true value of Jeong(情) as a positive value to foreigners who should keep their self-respect and survive in a strange Korean culture.
