ABSTRACT

This essay investigated the significance of Jesus' vocation as a carpenter(tekton) for understanding the life and ministry of ‘Jesus the hyo-ja.’ Since an occupation is an important expression of a person's life, a clearer comprehension of Jesus' trade holds the promise of a better understanding of the man behind the kerygma of the Christian community. Herod Antipas in 3 BC began to build Sepphoris, just four miles north of Nazareth, as his new Hellenistic capital. We explored the possible influences on Jesus and his world resulting from this major construction project. This study also sought to the literal function of tekton in the gospel of Mark, that is, irony. Through this quest, we will be able to establish the legitimacy of contextual approach on 7 missions of Hyo theology reflected in the story of ‘Jesus the Hyo-ja.’
