ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to find out the relationship among parent-child communication types and happiness. It would verify the importance of parent open communication for building happy life of child and also present basic data for practical education program and parents-education program. The target of this study was 250 males and 250 females, total 500 students with different life environment among elementary students in Seoul city. It used parent-child communication scale, happiness scale, and friendship scale as study tool, and parent-child communication and happiness scale were detailed in sub-factors by factor analysis. Study hypothesis was verified by statistical package, SPSS Window 17.0 and it was analyzed by ANOVA, correlation analysis, multiple regression, and crosstabs analysis. The results are summarized as follows;First, in Population Sociological variable of elementary students and parent-child communication, the time of dialogue showed significant difference statistically. It shows that the positive communication between parent and child enhances intimacy and self-esteem and also has positive influence on interpersonal relationship and social development of child. Thus, if there are lots of parent-child communication sharing sincere thought and feeling, it would enhance mutual understanding and relationship satisfaction. Second, in correlation between parent-child communication type and happiness, it showed that the more expression and empathy with parent enhanced, the more happiness enhanced. It means that if parents accept and understand their children, listening and sympathizing with them, the parent-child relationship would be stronger and be able to have deeper dialogue and children’s happiness would be enhanced, as well. Third, it showed that the factor of mother’s expression and father’s expression effected on happiness and also open communication among various environment factors had a big impact on the happiness of elementary students. It means that parent’s open communication plays an important role for child to live a happy life. From the above results of this study, the importance of parent-child positive communication was proved by showing that parent-child open communication has positive influence on friendship and interpersonal relationship of child, plays an important role for sociality improvement, and enhances happiness. It would be valuable that based on the results, this study gives the important basic direction for positive communication in order to enhancehappiness of child to parents.
