ABSTRACT

The rapid increase of elderly population has caused various problems on a personal and social level, one of which is solitary death. The purpose of this study is to understand solitary death in relation to the changes in social and familial structures and to identify the tasks for addressing the lonely death of the elderly. This study examines the phenomenon of dying alone among old individuals and explores the roles that Hyo can play in addressing the issues of disconnection and social isolation. First, this study summarizes the concept of solitary death among the elderly. Second, based on statistics of disconnected deaths, it outlines the social implications of the phenomenon and the reality of dying alone among the elderly. What draws out attention is the steady increase of disconnected death among older people. Solitary death among the elderly can be attributed to personal and social factors. Poverty, nuclear family, single-person households and the resultant disconnection and isolation as a whole contribute to the increase of solitary deaths among older people. Based on this observation, this study suggests that establishing basic relational values is required prior to the implementation of institutional measures. It is proposed that Hyo, which serves for social integration, can be an ethical basis for preventing solitary deaths among old people.
