ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to identify the quality of life and support needs of families who take care of family members with disabilities and to suggest support policies. A mixed method design was used for this study. For quantitative research, a survey was conducted on the quality of life of 700 family carers residing in Gyeongsangnam-do. For a qualitative study, in-depth interviews were conducted in order to gain a more in-depth and broader understanding of the life experiences and support needs from 20 carers. According to the results of the study, caregiving responsibilities were affecting the overall quality of life of family carers, and leisure activities and financial status were identified as the most affected elements of quality of life. This study suggested that current support arrangements that largely targeting family members with disabilities should be expanded to their family carers. More specifically, it was necessary to reduce the physical and psychological burden caused by caring role through increased respite care, and to provide financial support through carer payments to compensate the restricted economic activities.
