ABSTRACT

This study elucidates the developmental aspects and underlying principles of Lefebvre's urban theory, focusing on his works Urban Revolution, The Right to the City, and The Production of Space. Firstly, Lefebvre views the city in relation to the fate of the entire "urbanized" civilization that emerged after industrialization. He foresees a transition from the "industrial" to the "urban," where the realization of the urban stems from new consciousness of the urban people. The Right to the City strategically connects these new demands of the era to social movements and real-world politics. Furthermore, the reflection on rights drives the exploration of "the production of space" as the source of rights formation. Through this, Lefebvre formulates the general principles of spatial production and reveals space users as active agents intervening in production. According to him, modern cities are engulfed in "abstract space," which separates actors from the tangible world. As an alternative, Lefebvre advocates for the realization of 'differential space' and calls for the participation of relevant parties. The concept of parties, which has not been clearly defined, can be understood as "the difference that grows the difference." The thoughts on Lefebvre’s urban theory, as revealed in the above development, are characterized as "spatially deterministic," "production-centered," and "heuristic," all of which presuppose the reciprocal and simultaneous transformation of urban space and its agents. Based on this premise, Lefebvre argues that cities play a decisive role in both alienation and overcoming the modern world.
