ABSTRACT

This study aims to systematically describe the semantic differences among Korean temporal adverb synonyms influenced by event structure and aspectual meaning—namely ppalli/ppalukey (quickly), pangkum–kumpang (just now/soon), cikum/icey (now), and tasi–tto (again)—and to propose instructional applications for Korean language education. While previous studies have primarily focused on collocational patterns or usage contexts, this study adopts perspectives from event semantics and cognitive semantics to analyze how these temporal adverb synonyms are semantically differentiated according to the beginning, process, and endpoint of events, as well as the speaker’s viewpoint. In particular, the study employs image schemas and event-structural representations to visually clarify the semantic distinctions between each pair of adverbs, thereby enhancing learners’ intuitive understanding. To this end, a teaching–learning model based on the O–H–E (Observation–Hypothesis–Experiment) framework is designed to enable beginner learners of Korean to independently observe, infer, and internalize subtle semantic differences among temporal adverb synonyms. This study is significant in that it offers an integrated, event-structure-based explanation of temporal adverb synonyms and demonstrates their practical applicability to Korean vocabulary education.
