Contemporary corporations in the U.S.A. are increasingly seeking to reconfigure themselves as corporate citizens. Using ethnographic data gathered from a corporation in Hawai‘i, this paper examines anthropologically how a corporation called “HLC” sought to express corporate citizenship and figure itself as a corporate citizen by engaging in the education of sustainability. What is revealed is that by partnering with a local college, the HLC Company cofounded what is called the “Sustainability Education Institute (a pseudonym)” and created various educational programs and cultural practices that promoted sustainability as a locally meaningful and inhabitable sign of cultural citizenship. In educating sustainability and making it a locally recognizable mode of performing citizenship, the HLC Company, in turn, created the grounds of which the corporation could narrate itself as no longer a legal fiction but a ‘corporate citizen,’ which belongs to an actual community of sustainability-conscious social actors. It is argued that it is only through the creation and circulation of meaningful signs of citizenship that corporate entities can semiotically configure themselves as corporate citizens and legitimize their citizenship claims in corporate narratives and discourses.

Under the Roh Moo-hyun administration(2003-2008), two Koreas continued improvement in relations begun by the previous Kim Dae-jung administration. The flow of matter-energy and information between two Koreas consistently expanded during these administrations. Comparing growth rates in information and matter-energy, we find that the growth rate in information ran faster than that in matter-energy from 1989 to 1994; since 1995, both have run at a similar rate. This shows that the two Koreas recognized the relative advantage of information in relation to matter-energy, but focused on the flow of matter-energy. The two Korean governments recognized the significance of the state of affairs in the region surrounding the Korean Peninsula. At the same time, external pressure had a significant influence on the two Koreas’ relationship. Historically, the two Koreas’ relationship has been dependent on external pressure from the big powers.

This study has the following three topics: first, gender differences in academic achievement among elementary and middle school students; second, gender distribution at each performance level on the basis of the results of academic achievement assessment and changes in the achievement level for each gender with grades; third, the percentage of boys and girls at each performance level (superior and inferior groups). The results of this study can be discussed as follows: First, While girls made better performance for the subject of Korean over all grades from the 3rd in elementary school through the 2nd grade in middle school, there was no gender difference in performance for the subject of mathematics over all grades but the 3rd grade. Another result is that gender differences in academic performance vary by the school level. Second, Gender differences were compared at each academic achievement level for Korean and mathematics. As a result, while boys and girls showed a similar trend in the average total score from the 3rd grade in elementary school through the 2nd grade in middle school, gender differences in the percentage of students in the superior group (with score of 90s or higher) for the subjects of Korean and mathematics became larger from a certain moment on. That is, the percentage of girls began to be remarkably higher in the superior group for the subject of Korean at the 5th grade, and the percentage of boys began to be higher in the superior group forthe subject of mathematics at the 2nd grade in middle school. Third, the phenomenon that girls made better academic achieveme-nt for each subject than boys was more remarkable in the inferior group than in the superior group.
