ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study was to examine factors associated with college students' suicidal ideation by examining how it was affected by individual, family, school, social and cultural factors and mediating factors(e.g. self-identity and depression). Data were gathered from college students of five universities in Jeonbuk area. Using a structured self-administered questionnaire, a total of 1,500 questionnaires were distributed, and 1,329 of them were analyzed in this study. The path analysis revealed that the number of family members and friends who committed suicide and experience of visiting counseling center had a direct effect on suicidal ideation, and stress, experience of abuse during childhood, grade, and friend support had an indirect effect on suicidal ideation through self-identity and depression. In addition, counseling needs, communication skills between parents and children, expert support, and attitudes regarding one's appearance had both direct and indirect effects on suicidal ideation via self-identity and depression. However, attitudes regarding mass media suicide reports were not significantly associated with suicidal ideation. Based on the study findings, implications for practice to prevent and reduce suicidal ideation of college students and for future studies were discussed.
