ABSTRACT

Russia found Island 'Dokdo' in 1854, which was not on the Western map and in 1857, ministry of Navy of Imperial Russia had published a sea map of Korea confirming that Dokdo island is a territory of Korean own Isle near Ulrungdo, one of Korean inhabited island on the south-eastern sea. In publishing Korean sea map, Russian had surveyed 'Dokdo' while developing sea route to Pacific Ocean from Far East and then Russia came to know that Dokdo was is a subsidiary Island of Ulrungdo while they surveyed the island based on the point of Ulrungdo. However, Name of Dokdo has been named as OLibucha, Liancourt, Hornet, Dakkesima, etc by Imperial Russia, USSR and Federation of Russia. And surprisingly, in 1972, in spite of during Cold War, Defence Department of USSR published sailing directions of East Sea described the Isle named as Dokdo as pronounced as Korean and confirmed Island Dokdo is under control of Korean Government differentiating from United States of America. Since then, Defence Department of Federation of Russia has changed name as sailing directions of Korean peninsula from the name of Sea of Japan and have Liancourt(Dokdo) included in Korean territory lining outside of Dokdo Island. Accordingly, since foundation of Dokdo by Russia in 1854, Dokdo has been recognized as Korean own territory.
