AB - Treatment of injuries and diseases in the righteous army units was a very important issue in terms of maintaining combat power. This thesis is a study examining the medical practices and the participation of oriental doctors in the righteous army units.
In general, medical practices within the righteous army unit included self-treatment, hidden treatment, and return home. Self-treatment would have been largely a simple type of first aid. Diseases and injuries causing mobility difficulties were treated in hiding in the village or by unit members returning home. Therefore, there were not many cases of having separate departments such as "military doctors" within the righteous army unit.
The participation of oriental medical doctors in the righteous army has been confirmed since the mid-term righteous army war, and it also has been established that such participation occurred in various regions in Korea during the late righteous army war.
Oriental medicine doctors served almost as righteous army chiefs or as major staff members of righteous army units. Since it was an educated class, it was often in charge of major positions within the unit. Like other righteous armies, the righteous army of oriental medical doctors was converted into an independent army centered on Manchuria after the fall of the Daehan Empire.
