ABSTRACT

The history of Korean military songs began in earnest after the establishment of the Korean government in 1948. At this time, many new military songs were composed, and there was a movement to record military songs. While the role of recordings in the distribution of military songs is not absolute, early military song recordings from the 1940s and 50s have great archival value as they provide a first-hand account of the sounds of the time, and are important as research objects. The earliest examples of military song recordings appear as early as 1949, and their production expanded with the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950. During the war, the Daegu-based Orient Record in particular played a key role, releasing many records. After the war, several Seoul-based record labels continued to produce military music, with Universal Record and Oasis Record, two of the most prominent labels of the 1950s, commissioned by the military authorities. By the end of the 1950s, at least 20 SP recordings of military songs released by various record companies have been identified, and they were recorded with the participation of various musicians from the fields of popular music and auteur music. Among them, the roles of Kim Dong-jin, Park Si-chun, and Kim Hee-jo were particularly prominent.
