ABSTRACT

This study analyzed the establishment and development of the Korean Coast Guard during the United States (U.S.) Army Military Government in Korea, through the framework of the combination of Japan's naval legacy left south of the 38th parallel after liberation and U.S. military assistance. After liberation, an extensive naval legacy was left by Japan in the Korean Peninsula south of the 38th parallel. The Korean Coast Guard rapidly expanded its organization by leveraging these resources. At the same time, it sought to alleviate the scarcity of resources by seeking military assistance from the United States. Through these endeavors, within a brief time frame the Korean Coast Guard expanded its capabilities to autonomously execute coastal security operations in the southern region of the Korean Peninsula below the 38th parallel.
