ABSTRACT

Tang army was commanded by Li ji, the emperor Taizong, Zhang Liang and Zhang Jian. The Tang army commanded by Li Ji, was composed of zhechong fu weishi, i.e. guarding warrior of intrepid garrison, guard warriors, recruited soldiers, Turks and other nomadic troops, and a surrendered non-Chinese of Lanzhou and Hezhou presumed to be the Qiangs, the Tibetan nomad people. Li Ji commanded nine corps commanders, composed of Three ex-Turks royal family and chieftain, ex-king of Gaochang, five Chinese general including an experienced veteran general called Zhang Shigui and Qiang xingben. The army commanded by Tang Taizong was consisted of the at least 60,000 soldiers including the Praetorian Armies of the Northern Command and other soldiers. The Tang navy commanded by Zhang Liang was composed of a few guarding warriors of intrepid garrison, many recruited soldiers from Jiangnan, Huinan, Lingnan province and San Xia region who skilled in navigation and naval warfare. Zhang Jian, area commander of Yingzhou, commanded area command’s soldiers of Yingzhou and Youzhou composed of zhechong fu weishi, guard warriors in Zhen, shu, fortress, Shouzhuo called Fanren in Chinese and nomadic cavalry of the Qitans, Xi, and Mohe.
