ABSTRACT

Bigeumseodang(緋衿誓幢) was one of the Nine Seodang(誓幢)s of Silla and reorganized in 693 from Jangchangdang(長槍幢). Also, there are records of Bigeumdangju(緋衿幢主) and Bigeumgam(緋衿監) in Samguksagi(三國史記). I consider that the reorganization of Bigeumseodang was an event that was closely related to the political situation of the early reign of King Hyoso(孝昭王), especially as a reaction to the Buryerang(夫禮 郞) disappearance case from March to May 693. The reorganization was likely triggered by “Conscription around the capital region(募於 國).” Jinbok(眞福), who had served as Chong-gwan of Seodang(誓幢摠 管), appointed in 661 and served as Sangdaedeung(上大等) from the era of King Shinmun(神文王) to 694, would have led this action to address domestic unrest. I also assumed that Bigeumseodang had been reorganized to assist and supplement units like Jageumseodang(紫衿誓幢) and Nokgeumseodang(綠衿誓幢) referring to the color of the collars of Bigeumseodang as part of the four-rank color system of the official attire(公服). Meanwhile, considering the deployment of Bigeumdangju, I supposed they had performed roles not only to deal with the military weakness but also to keep public order and security in areas where the administrative vacuum had appeared. On the other hand, consulting the former research, I speculated that Bigeumgam ‘leading Mabyeongs(領馬兵)’ would have acted as a link between Bigeumseodang in the capital and Bigemdang in Provinces, delivering royal commands and showing the dignity of the kingship.
