ABSTRACT

This study interprets Later Baekje’s September 932 raid on the Yeseong River and its attack on Daeudo the following month as successive phases of a maritime offensive, and examines Goryeo’s response. The Yeseong River–Gyeonggi Bay waterway linked Gaeseong with the West Sea. Its ports served overseas exchange and diplomatic missions in peacetime but could provide hostile fleets with access to Goryeo’s capital region in wartime. In September, Later Baekje’s navy entered the Yeseong River, burned 100 ships at Yeomju, Baekju, and Jeongju, and seized 300 horses from Jeosando. These areas may have served as concentration points for Goryeo ships and as maritime operational bases. The raid therefore targeted not merely coastal settlements but the maritime infrastructure and military resources of Goryeo’s capital region. The Balseong record also suggests that it threatened Gaeseong’s outer defenses. The October attack on Daeudo was a follow-up offensive. Its location should be reconsidered within the central waters of the West Sea, including Gyeonggi Bay. Yu Geom-pil responded by recruiting able-bodied men on Gokdo and Poeuldo and repairing warships. His 935 campaign in Naju demonstrates Goryeo’s recovery of maritime operational capacity in southwestern waters; the restored Naju route was later used in Jin Hwon’s defection to Goryeo. Ultimately, Later Baekje’s 932 offensive sought to reverse its unfavorable position after the Battle of Gochang. It struck Goryeo’s maritime infrastructure but failed to secure lasting maritime superiority, while Goryeo rebuilt its defenses and restored the Naju route.
