ABSTRACT

During the Cold War, Democratic People's Republic of Korea and East Germany called each other ‘Western Outpost’ and ‘Eastern Outpost’ as socialist bastions against capitalism in Asia and Europe, respectively. In particular, the syndetistic trends of conflict and reconciliation between the US and the Soviet Union and normalization of relations between China and the USSR in the mid-1980s would have required much consideration and new strategies from the divided countries of East Germany and Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Therefore, this study analyzed the internal and external situations of each country at the time, leaders' perceptions, cooperation strategies, and implications through the summit meeting between Kim Il-sung and Honecker in the mid-1980s. First, we looked at the rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula and the easing of tensions between East and West Germany in the 1980s. Second, the economic and security cooperation measures between the two countries and the strengthening of solidarity between the socialist camps were confirmed through the contents of the private meeting during the summit. Third, beyond the ‘Cold War history centered on the U.S.S.’ and the ‘history of the Sino-Soviet centered camp,’ the ideal of the ‘new world’ sought by Democratic People's Republic of Korea and East Germany was examined.
