The usage of ‘gaeul-gaeul-hada(가을가을하다)’ type verbs, which is a form in which ‘–hada’ is combined with reduplicated nouns, has become widespread recently. These expressions not only differ from the existing way of word formation, but also reflect a new linguistic environment and the changed intuition of language users. This study examines the morphological and semantic characteristics that facilitate the formation of ‘gaeul-gaeul-hada’ type verbs. In particular, it is inferred that those verbs are generated by combining ‘-hada’ with a reduplicated noun form ‘gaeul-gaeul’, which embodies the meanings of ‘emphasis’ and ‘stativity’. Besides, the feature of ‘gaeul-gaeul-hada’ that it has a structure and meaning similar to the onomatopoeic or mimetic words and a ‘han X hada’ form provides a basis for inferring their word formation process. Furthermore, it is also explained that the frequent use of ‘gaeul-gaeul-hada’ type verbs is attributed to the fact that this construction is consistent with the intuition of the speakers and the language community.

The purpose of this study is to reinterpret old age as an independent existence based on Park Wan-suh’s later works. In society, old age tends to be described as asexual and passive, free from desires and needs, and is sometimes exposed to compositive discrimination. However, Park’s novels overcome the stereotypes of old age. The novels focus on being “woman” by showing the characters who, while playing the typical roles, do not fully embrace the roles having been predetermined according to one’s life cycle. When her works are put in chronological order, it is clear that this tendency becomes more prominent as Park ages. This study explores a series of patterns that could be interpreted as a process of “the reconstruction of the self in old age,” as defined in psychoanalysis. In this context, this study examines the psychological and physical conflicts that the old people experience as they are reborn as proactive persons. It analyzes the core hegemony systems which they are trying to escape from and how they restore their sexuality and reestablish their identities. The aim of this study is to shed light on old age from a broader perspective and provide an opportunity to reconsider what it means to get older.

This paper attempts to make a new approach to examining and interpreting old folk songs through “A Song of Prison No. 8”, which was newly discovered and reproduced in 2019. “A Song of Prison No. 8” is based on two preceding original songs: “The Seonjukgyo Blood Bridge” and “Korea Has Survived”. These songs had been out of circulation for a while until they were later rediscovered. The original songs were written and sung in prisons by seven women fighting for the independence of the nation from Japanese colonial rule, including Yu Gwan-sun, Shim Myeong-cheol, Eo Yun-hee, Kwon Ae-ra, Shin Gwan-bin, Lim Myeong-ae and Kim Hyang-hwa. The discovery of this song has the significance in terms of not only rediscovering a historical song that was almost forgotten but also inheriting the heritage of valuable oral literature. Considering the background and characteristics of this song, it probably has a meaning of conveying the sentiments of the grass-roots and transmitting and propagating oral traditions, thus paving the way for a new genre-based interpretation. In addition, anti-Japanese organizations were established for independence movements during the Japanese colonial period, and the fact that people’s songs containing the characteristics of the communities became popular again with the change of the times is even more meaningful as it implies an important value in terms of re-illuminating folklore.
