ABSTRACT

The virtue approach to moral education has been discussed for a long time, but its characteristics and system are not yet clearly defined in the academic community of moral education in Korea. Consequently, the cultivation of virtue has often been mistakenly understood as the virtue approach to moral education. The “Character Education Promotion Act” exemplifies this misunderstanding. This paper examines the issues related to such misconceptions and argues that the virtue approach to moral education should be grounded in the theoretical perspectives of virtue ethics. However, it contends that an application of virtue ethics in a broad sense to moral education is not advisable because it becomes challenging to differentiate this approach from other frameworks such as Duty Ethics. Therefore, virtue ethics in a narrower sense is categorized, and its defining features are elucidated. In order to articulate the characteristics of the virtue approach to moral education based on virtue ethics, the distinctions between virtue ethics and Duty Ethics are explored in three dimensions, and the essential characteristics that the virtue approach to moral education should embrace are discussed in detail.
