ABSTRACT

In this paper, the degree of vocabulary control for definition in Basic Dictionary of the Korean Language is quantitatively analyzed. This is because the definitions of Basic Korean Dictionary, which functions as a learner's dictionary, help learners study Korean, and in order to function as the basis of a bilingual dictionary, they must be understandable to learners through the control of the definition vocabulary. The criteria for analysis are the size of the meaning-solving vocabulary, whether or not the definition vocabulary is listed as a headword, and the degree of controlling the difficulty of the definition vocabulary. The result shows that the definition vocabulary of Basic Dictionary of Korean was relatively controlled in terms of scale. Additionally, 8,581 vocabularies, which is 63.5% of the total vocabulary, were registered as headwords, and only 36.5% were unregistered. This shows that, compared to general dictionaries, it is possible to understand the meaning of the definition to a significant degree within the dictionary. As a result of analyzing the level of definition vocabulary, approximately 70% of the definition vocabulary for beginner headwords was the words used at the beginner and intermediate level, and approximately 67.1% of the definition vocabulary for intermediate-level headwords was for the beginner and intermediate level. Therefore, it is expected that below intermediate level learners will have some difficulty in understanding the vocabulary.
