AB - This paper explores the possibility of a mutually enriching exchange in the works “Mother Tongue (Mutterzunge)” and “Grandfather Tongue (Großvaterzunge)”, published in Emine S. Özdamar’s 1990 collection of essays, Mother Tongue. In the organically connected narratives, both works address the real problems and existential experiences that immigrants universally experience when they enter into a multicultural society and cross the boundaries of language and culture. Furthermore, the works demonstrate a process in which cultural dialogue becomes a mutually enriching exchange that can be an important key to help resolve conflicts and integrate into a multicultural society. In order to better and more clearly analyze this process of mutually enriching exchange, the theory of Transactional Analysis is used to analyze the ‘Ego State,’ ‘Transactional Pattern’ and ‘Existential Positions’ of the main and secondary characters.
The process of change in the ‘Existential Positions’ of the protagonist in Özdamar’s work, who acquires autonomy, and the ‘I’m OK-You’re OK’ attitude in his interaction with a German girl, as well as the mutually enriching exchange that is briefly but intensively maintained in the ‘Complementary Transaction’, point to the possibility of a hope for integration into a multicultural society.
