ABSTRACT

In order to understand the language used by language users in a particular period, we generally examine books or other publications from the time. This is because there were no recorders in the medieval period, and recording the voices of language users was not common in the modern times. Publications were written in the language of the writer, not the language of the language users, so it is somewhat difficult to directly understand the reality of usages on the side of the language users. This paper will use newspaper columns published serially at The Dong-A Ilbo in the 1930s, in which the readers actively participated, in order to look into the aspects of the word formation used by the language users at that time. Not only did they create their own pseudonyms, but they also described their illnesses in various ways. While other articles at that time were written by reporters or writers, the characteristics of these columns is that the language of the readers is directly reflected, allowing us to transparently look into the language usage of the readers without going through a third party.
