AB - The purpose of this study is to examine the aspects and the characteristics of educating Korean language as a second language in North Korea by acquiring and analyzing Korean language textbooks that were used at Pyongyang Foreigners School in the 1980s. This study analyzes a Korean language textbook for secondary school students at Pyongyang Foreigners School and a Korean language textbook for international students at Kim Il Sung University published around the same time as a standard for comparison, and identifies a number of elements that characterize a textbook of Korean language as a second language. Before proceeding with the discussions, we reviewed the previous studies on textbooks for non-Korean learners in North Korea and the historical context of Pyongyang Foreigners School as an educational space. Based on the analysis of the editing and organization of the textbooks, as well as the procedures and categories of each unit, we could conclude that the textbooks for secondary school students are modelled after the textbooks for international students and have been revised and reorganized with second language learners in mind, and that they reflect the characteristics of different educational institutions while maintaining the trend of foreign language education in North Korea. This study is meaningful in that it reconstructs one aspect of Korean language education for foreigners in North Korea in the 1980s.
