ABSTRACT

This paper is aimed at examining the psychological characteristics of the main characters of Korean web novels. It has analyzed the psychological characteristics of the main characters of web novels that are visually differentiated from traditional novels, and also considered the causes and implications of their formation. As a preceding work, we reviewed the changes in web novels from the early period to the present times, and examined whether we can find the common characteristics of commercially successful works and can rearrange their rules. The typical characteristics of current web novels is the result of adaptation that has been constantly changing to meet the needs of the market. As all elements that make up the contents, such as the topics, themes, methods of process, and the rhythm of the narrative, have evolved into a style favored by the market, it has become equipped with its own standards. The psychology of the protagonist is also not different in that it is subject to a clearly typical standard. The protagonist of the web novels must hide such negative emotions as anguish, remorse, and regret deeply under the surface of the narrative, in order to be filled with conviction and belief, and at the same time must be fair. Underlying the phenomenon, rarely found both in traditional novels and webtoons, are resistance and denial to a real society where justice is often neglected and the way of climbing up the social ladder of class has disappeared.
