ABSTRACT

This study analyzes different versions of Seonchaekmyeongje (鮮冊名題), a thematic bibliographic catalog written by Maema Kyosaku, based on ancient Korean texts. Seonchaekmyeongje is a catalog that categorizes Korean classical texts by theme, but unlike Goseonchaekbo (古鮮冊譜)―a contemporary work by Maema Kyosaku—it has not been studied in detail, thus making it difficult for researchers to utilize it effectively. Therefore, this study identifies the locations of the collections of Seonchaekmyeongje both at home and abroad, and conducts a thorough investigation and analysis of the versions held in each location. The study focuses on the differences in the division of volumes and the classified categories among these versions. As a result, the version collected by Sungkyunkwan University was presumed to be an original draft copy, and the revisions of this version were found in the copies held by the Toyo Bunko Library in Japan. Furthermore, it was confirmed that subsequent versions held by Seoul National University and the National Library of Korea were revised based on the Sungkyunkwan University version. The draft version of Seonchaekmyeongje held at Sungkyunkwan University preserves the whole process of the revision intact, and unlike other domestic versions that are incomplete, it was identified as a complete version, thus having a unique value as a research resource.
