ABSTRACT

This study critically examines how Standard Korean Dictionary (Pyojun gugeo dae-sajeon) presents the formal and semantic information of the headwords of four-character Sino-Korean idioms and proposes a proper descriptive model. For this purpose, Chapter 2 defines four-character Sino-Korean idioms as the four-syllable Sino-Korean words that cannot be formed by using the word-formation rules of Korean words. Of the four-syllable Sino-Korean words listed in the dictionary, those classified as the headwords of four-character Sino-Korean idioms were selected, and their frequencies of use were analyzed to determine the 100 most frequently used expressions that served as the study's data. Chapter 3 analyzes the descriptive aspects of the headwords of four-character Sino-Korean idioms in the dictionary, dividing the focus into formal and semantic information. With regard to formal information, the study examines whether the parts of speech are correctly presented and whether morphological and syntactic characteristics are adequately detailed. As for semantic information, the study evaluates whether the definitions are properly made and whether the relationships with idiomatic phrases or proverbs are clearly indicated. Chapter 4 discusses methods to address the issues having been identified in the current descriptive approaches for the headwords of four-character Sino-Korean idioms and proposes a descriptive model that incorporates the suggestions for improvements.
