ABSTRACT

It is essential to take a systematic perspective based on language usage in order to fully describe the diverse characteristics of onomatopoeic and mimetic words in Korean dictionaries. In this regard, Standard Korean Dictionary (Pyojun gugeo dae-sajeon) systematically presents the consistency with regard to the definitions of onomatopoeic and mimetic words and their detailed differences in terms of semantic nuances. However, as Standard Korean Dictionary has become a standard of today’s language usage, it is necessary to find out whether the consistency and systematicity of the dictionary’s descriptions reflects not only the speakers’ linguistic intuition of onomatopoeic and mimetic words at the time of its compilation but also the current language speakers’ intuition of the words. This study has analyzed the semantic descriptions of onomatopoeic and mimetic words in Standard Korean Dictionary, specifically focusing on repetitive words, words with vowel gradation and consonant replacement, and those with abbreviation and original word relationships, and has also discussed ways to improve the dictionary’s descriptive systems by examining their consistency and systematicity.
