ABSTRACT

Two prevailing narratives exist regarding the humanities. One is the discourse that the humanities are in crisis, and the other is the claim that society is in need of humanistic literacy. This paper seeks to examine both perspectives and to reflect on the future direction of humanities studies. The crisis of the humanities can be attributed largely to their traditional emphasis on the transmission and accumulation of humanistic knowledge. In order to meet the demands of society, the humanities must thoughtfully and urgently shift away from a knowledge-centered approach and return to their core aims: cultivating the competence to critically understand the concepts that constitute knowledge, the capacity to engage in scientific inquiry into the processes and methodologies of knowledge acquisition, and the creativity to identify connections among existing knowledge and to generate new ideas. Furthermore, when integrated with efforts to foster a scientific attitude, the humanities can fulfill a crucial role in responding to societal needs.
