AB - While Korean academia frequently draws on the research of many Chinese scholars in its study of Buyeo, Goguryeo, and Balhae, Jin Yufu (金毓黻) is undoubtedly one of the most prominent among them. Despite his considerable influence on domestic scholarship, relatively little research has been devoted to the Liaohai Congshu (遼海叢書). The Liaohai Congshu is a comprehensive collection of historical and literary works compiled by Jin Yufu who pursed his long-held aspiration to collect and organize the historical documents relating to his native region after being detained and subsequently released by the Japanese Empire following the Mukden Incident (September 18 Incident) in 1931. The works included in the collection concern the historical traces, ancient anecdotes, topographical maps, illustrated accounts, travelogues, poetry, and miscellaneous writings by local figures from the Northeast region, specifically Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, and Jehol. According to his own preface, Kanyinyuanqi (刊印緣起), it is evident that his editorial aims were driven not only by scholarly considerations but also by personal sentiments, such as love for his hometown, reverence for local predecessors, and a competitive desire to keep pace with similar collecting efforts in other regions.
Among the 87 titles included in the collection, I have identified five as “K-books from the traditional period”: ① Fengchengsuolu (鳳城瑣錄), a geographical source, and its appendix, the royal historical source Chaoxianyishi (朝鮮軼事); ② Luanyanglu (灤陽錄), a travelogue; ③ Yantaizaiyoulu (燕臺再 游錄); ④ Shenguanlu (瀋館錄); and ⑤ Shenyangriji (瀋陽日記), a diary.
Furthermore, by providing supplementary discussion of six other Korea-related books, I emphasized the importance and value of the Liaohai Congshu and its individual text for Korean Studies. Given their significant value to the field of Korean Studies, these materials warrant ongoing attention and further study.
