ABSTRACT

This consideration focuses on the compound words in Chinese with 4 syllables composed of a numeral letter in the first syllable. The research data are collected from the words in 'Modern Chinese dictionary'(『现代汉语词典』). These words with a numeral in the first syllable have been generally used to function as derived forms, metaphors, descriptions and indications. This fact proves that the compound words such as polysyllable make Chinese language possible to be expressed in various forms and meanings. The compound word in Chinese, a lower unit than phrase in linguistics, is a sort of customary expressions involving Chinese culture, history and so on. It is important to ask the question of what is the meaning of numeral letters in words and how it could be used within their typical forms as they present. Concentrating on this problem, the result shows that the numeral letters have 68% of meaning related to the quantity. Also, it can be figured out that '转义' used in cultural meaning includes 32% of diverse thoughts and expressions.
