ABSTRACT

People generally see that Koreanology in China started late 1970’s or early 1980’s. In the early stage, colleges in northern area lead the study for the whole Korean peninsula. Humanities occupied the majority at that time, such as history or linguistics, which were performed mainly in the form of translation and introduction of South/North Korean books. This turned to be more active in late 1980’s, which was influenced by the rapid economic growth of Korea, and was accelerated much more into necessity by the Asian Games and Olympic Games held in 1986 and 1988, respectively. Research institutes spread out from the northern area, and most prominent colleges in the area started to produce study results about Korea. Chinese studies about Korea before 1990 can be summarized that studies began to separate North from South, and studies get diversified from humanity to include versatile areas. The level of study also upgraded from translation and introductory stage to questioning and analyzing. After 1990, takeoffs incomparable to those of early stage have been showing, which is mainly because of diplomatic ties between the two countries in 1992. The number of books about Korea published in China explains it; 194 books were published for 10 years since 1980 through 1989, while 416 books were out into the world for next 10 years which is more than 2 times of preceding 10 years, and 1,533 books for the following 10 years since 2000 through 2009 which exceed previous one by 3.7 times. From linguistics and history in the early phase, studies also expanded to almost every area including politics, economy, and culture. If broken down by subject, politics occupied the biggest portion with 22% for 10 years before 2000 while economy is standing in the first place with 28% of portion for 10 years after 2000. From Chinese study results, we can see that its major concerns on Korea are focusing on politics and economics.
