ABSTRACT

There are two different types of Korean musicals in Japan: licensed musicals and musical tours. There were a very few number of tours since ‘Yangban Jeon’ in 1991, but after a while it grew fast with the famous Korean wave ‘Hallyu’ and reached its peak in 2013. While Korean musical tours have been going downhill since Amuse Entertainment closed Amuse Musical Theatre in Japan. Occasionally, however, the musical with Korea Idols ‘On Air Redeye Flight’ was able to make some decent achievement. Above all things, the differentiation of K-Musical and K-pop musical needs to be firmly identified. The definition of each is not yet academically divided, but the terms are used differently in Japan. We are going to research on the concept of K-pop musical along with the cases of ‘On Air Redeye Flight’ and ‘SHOCK’ by Johnnys’ pop star which is another great example of a J-pop musical. There are several facts in common between the musicals. They both used ‘an idol star’ as a strategy and included a fan-meeting in the performance. Also the performance is much like a pop concert. What we can know from these ‘strategies’ is that they cast idol stars, who is popular enough to sell tickets only with their names, and that they create another genre of musicals. Local prosperity is a goal of musical tours. In order to achieve the goal, it is critical to be aware of the aspects of successful musicals and apply them to our new musicals. We hope this research is worth implementing to understand the blueprint of successful foreign musical tours.
