AB - It is well-known that Alan Turing who played a pioneering role in the development of artificial intelligence(AI) formulated the question ‘Can machines think?’ and made a definite answer to it. Now, with the advent of the fourth industrial revolution and the post-human era, artificial intelligence increases its visible influence in many concrete fields of human lives as well as in the professional disciplines. In this context we attempt to do a consilient research in which the problem of AI’s religiosity is philosophically examined. As a first attempt of that research, the paper concerns the problem ‘Can artificial intelligence do religious meditation?.’ This emerges as an unknown puzzle in the current research fields of AI.
In order to resolve the above problem in an adequate way, this paper, with reference to the features of human’s religious meditation, explores the following four issues: (i) What is the proposition that AI can do some religious meditation supposed to mean?, (ii) What could be the difference between human’s and AI’s religious meditations?, (iii) In what sense and to what extent can AI simulate human’s religious meditation?, and (iv) What could be the principles of the mind connected to AI’s religious meditation? Regarding these matters, the notions of ‘Turing test,’ ‘the criterion of having a mind,’ and ‘the intentionality of mind’ are newly reinterpreted. In particular, while presenting the ideas of what I call ‘filling intentionality,’ ‘emptying intentionality,’ and ‘meta intentionality,’ the author of the paper argues that the possibility of AI’s religious meditation is largely dependent on how these three forms of aboutness are theorized and implemented.
