ABSTRACT

The translation of a literary work is not simply changing a Source Language to a Target Language. It has to convey the diverse literary perspectives and techniques, and artistic sensibility. Misunderstanding and misconception are an unavoidable for the original text in the process of being carried over to the translator's text. As a solution to this Andre Lefevere proposed the refraction, or the rewriting, of text translation. He explained that refraction is bound to occur because of misunderstanding and misconception that are bound to occur in the translation process. However, Lefevere emphasized that this refraction in translation rather amplified a literary work's status and influence. The cases of refraction from the original work discovered in the three 『술라(Sula)』 translations will be helpful in knowing the current Korean literary translation's position. A translator's broader, creative intervention, which will be the translator’s task, is hoped to take place in the Korean translation.
