ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to examine how Plotinos establishes and integrates the concept of the matter in Platon and Aristotles, and to reveal the inherent meaning of his concept of the matter. This argument shows that the concept of the matter of Plotinos plays an important role in understanding his metaphysics, not merely as an opposite concept of spirit(nous) or the One(hen). This is also a discussion of the relationship between the mental world that has been neglected in the study of Plotinos thought and the matter in the phenomenal world. In addition, his concept of matter is also an important key to understanding his monistic thought to link the world of the mental and the world of the phenomenon. Finally, the discussion of the material concept of Plotinos makes it possible to reinterpret the absolute superiority and transcendence of the mysterious spiritual world rather than the phenomenal world, which is the problem of his metaphysics of the One. This study will focus on the following three contents. The first discusses how Plotinos accepts the concept of matter in Plato and Aristotle. The second reveals the unique meaning of the concept of matter of Plotinos itself. Third, we examine the concept of matter in Plotinos from the point of view of his theoretical thought, and examine whether the possibility of linking the world of the mental with the world of the phenomenon is implied in the concept of matter.
