ABSTRACT

This essay aims to analyze Dasan(茶山) Jeong Yakyong(丁若鏞)’s discourse on the topos expressed in his book about the Zhouyi and the Fengsui. The concept of the wei(位) is closely related with the subject of topos, Basically, the wei refers to the location in space but at the same time has political, social and cultural implications, In the Zhouyi, the guawei(卦位) refers basically to the location in a hexagram but at the same time, also the various relations existing in the realms of nature and society. In the next place, Fengsui refers to the effects of land on human destiny. The fangwei(方位, azimuth) is dealt with significantly both in the Zhouyi and the Fengsui. Dasan shows a respect for the concept of fangwei presented in ancient rituals, and acknowledges its authority in his Zhouyisijian. On the other hand, Dasan is adamantly opposed to the Fengsui. Dasan challenges it with rational suspicion about the theoretical premise that lay in the Fengsui. This reveales the view of Silhak which emphasized the empirical evidence and rational basis as a criterion of truth.
