ABSTRACT

This study investigates the visual characteristics and meaning of the local propaganda media "Buseilban(府勢一般)", which was periodically published in "Bu(府)", the representative administration district in the Japanese colonial period. The "Buseilban" was a propaganda medium showing that the entire Joseon was developed through Japanese colonial rule. The photos emphasized the fact that Japanese colonial rule modernized the city, education, and sanitation. By showing the numerical value of various statistics about the state of development, it made the public feel that Joseon actually developed. The historical and cultural data showed that the history of Joseon was re-recognized by Japan and assimilated with Japan. Through this visualization strategy of the "Buseilban", they made the public believe in the legitimacy of its colonial rule.
