ABSTRACT

This paper is a study on Story of Hong Gil-dong performed in the 1930s popular theater Shinmoodae. Since September 1932, Shinmoodae has improved the system and goals of the theatrical company and started to produce kino drama. The previous Shinmoodae aimed to play a drama based on the production of comedy, so the policy of kino drama meant that the direction of management and production was changed. In the transformation of this policy, which succeeded when Na Un-kyoo joined the theater, Story of Hong Gil-dong was a leading pioneering work that experimented and led the production of kino drama. Moreover in Korean culture and art world, the scenarios and drama scripts that were adapted from Story of Hong Gil-dong were very rare. Therefore, the case of Shinmoodae is a leading example of the possibility of changing the contents of Story of Hong Gil-dong.
