AB - In , the consistency between the first half of Hong Gildong's domestic activities and the latter half when he had remarkable overseas activities is still unclear, since Hong Gil-dong, who criticized the contradictions of the caste system and feudal system of Joseon Dynasty to help the people, and went abroad to conquer Yul-do without solving the problem.
In fact, however, the first and second parts of are very unified. Nevertheless, the reason the two parts are considered as being discrepant is because Hong Gildong is seen as a hero, a positive person. Since he was an illegitimate child, he had experienced oppression by his own family until running away from home and congregating thieves to form his team called Hwalbindang to save the people. Hong Gildong is presented through the frame of weak man and a Robin Hood figure, so it became hard for many to understand that he left the Joseon Dynasty without carrying out any major changes domestically and ended up waging a war to invade Yul-do.
This paper revealed that Hong Gildong is not the one who corresponds to so-called 'lifestory of a hero', but rather a weak man who was in danger of being born as a illegitimate child, which means that no one wanted his birth. Furthermore, it also identified that after running away from home Hong Gildong staged a series of political protests, such as congregating thieves, forming Hwalbindang, and giving relief to the indigent people by proving and showing his presence to the world. Thereby this paper verified that he ended up proving his presence by being appointed the Minister of War and then ultimately achieving his own desire by going abroad and conquer Yul-do.
